Moon Rock? Take 2 (2021)

For me, painting and drawing is a way to study overlooked things, allowing me to inhabit a place and feel at home. I am interested in how, especially in urban areas, the power of nature seems diminished in comparison to human achievements and activities such as tall buildings and the frenetic pace of life. However, even in cities natural processes still continue: for example trees grow and bloom and the wind carries seeds around. I like to observe and record these things, which, when closely studied, can become mysterious and fascinating.

Working from life through direct observation allows me to focus on the subtleties of objects and environments and let my mind wander while looking closely and attempting to translate what is before me onto a surface. I enjoy how, when being still, interesting and even dramatic phenomena emerge that I normally would have missed. For the still lives, I begin by gathering things that I find laying around that catch my eye for one reason or another—then, ideally, they take on a life of their own.
